A message to the Greater Cleveland Gay Community from John ....

On Saturday, June 19, 2004, Longevity celebrated its 2nd anniversary. During that same weekend the gay community of Greater Cleveland also celebrated PRIDE the parties, the parade, the festival.

PRIDE, however, should not only be a celebration of who we are and the attention it generates for the gay community, it should also signal an opportunity to show support within our community. Although many people attended and supported these events there were just too many within our community who did nothing. In my view, doing nothing achieves nothing. Why is PRIDE only once a year? Could it be that it is all we can handle?

Once the second anniversary celebration at Longevity was over, I had the opportunity to reflect upon the weekend. I was personally grateful yet also personally disappointed.

Although the Longevity celebration was a huge success, I know from personal experience that only 2 of the people that I mailed personal invitations to took the time to attend Longevity's second anniversary. It was deeply disappointing yet typically illuminates the sad fact that too many within our community could care less about supporting each other – you know who you are. I too dropped the ball. The only bar represented in the PRIDE parade was APEX.

Our world is troubled, our community is troubled and our gay community still stands divided in many ways. In these troubled times we must look to ourselves to accept and support each other before we can expect everyone else to do the same.

I also feel compelled to express my appreciation to all of the people within our community who took part, not only in Longevity's celebration (please see the inside front cover) – like Rocky from Rockies and Richard from A Man's World but also to those of you who took the time to participate and support our community at the PRIDE events in Cleveland.

I look forward to Longevity's third anniversary next year as well as supporting PRIDE in 2005. In the meantime I urge everyone within our community to rise up to the greater challenge of supporting events such as PRIDE as well as the clubs, businesses and organizations that are within our community. Together we must support, acknowledge and protect each other.

My name is John Barlock owner of Longevity and I approved this message.

"We're not a gay bar .... We're not a straight bar ....

We're not a straight bar .... We're Longevity ... We're a difference!"
